The case has rapidly escalated into a political firestorm. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has prominently alleged that Manojit Mishra has direct links with powerful figures within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Social media posts by BJP leaders, including National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari and IT Chief Amit Malviya, have shared images purportedly showing Mishra alongside senior TMC leaders such as MP Abhishek Banerjee, Councillor Kajari Banerjee (Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s sister-in-law), and State Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya. These allegations suggest that Mishra was formerly the president of the college’s Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit and the organizational secretary of the south Kolkata wing of the TMC’s student body.
Furthermore, disturbing reports have surfaced alleging that college authorities were instructed to lock the gates while the crime was taking place inside the campus. These claims have led to urgent questions from the opposition regarding who might have provided Manojit Mishra with such alleged impunity and whether any shielding occurred.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, with Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar writing to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, seeking a swift and time-bound investigation. The NCW has also requested that full support, including medical and psychological care, legal assistance, and compensation, be provided to the victim.

They have also used the moment to advocate for their proposed Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill. Meanwhile, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim has stated he will comment after being briefed by the police. The incident has intensified concerns over campus safety and women’s security in West Bengal, prompting widespread public outrage and demands for accountability.
